If you’ve been hanging around the new age community, you’ve probably heard that you already have everything inside of you to manifest what you want and create the change you want to see in the world. I agree, but at the same time I believe magick is a powerful tool we can use to help us grow spiritually and manifest what we want more effectively. Magick isn’t for everyone, but for those who feel called to learn more about it, here are some of the reasons why I love magick and how it can benefit us.
Magick and ritual have been used for thousands of years dating back to ancient Egypt and perhaps even further. It was the original science. Practitioners of magick were healers, spiritual counsellors, herbalists, psychics, and the wise men and women people turned to for help and guidance. These magicians and witches had a deep understanding of nature and how the Universe worked, along with insight into what was happening in the spiritual world. Although magick was driven underground by science and religion it’s resurfaced in the past few decades and is now being openly practiced once again.
Here are 4 reasons to practice magick today:
1. It strengthens our connection to the Divine. Whether you believe in a Universal energy that’s helping us co-create our lives, or in particular gods and goddesses, magick helps strengthen that bond by honouring the sacred. When we set time aside to do magick and ritual, we are merging the physical world with the spiritual and creating sacred space. We are recognizing that there is another force at work helping us, and that “something” can assist us in the spiritual realm. Honouring that force reminds us that we’re not alone, we’re are connected to the Divine and that we can have a relationship with that energy. The feeling this relationship evokes in us is pretty much impossible to put into words. It’s ecstatic and calming at the same time. It’s like falling in love with something you can’t see or explain, but you know is real.
2. It strengthens our connection to the Earth. Magick uses the occult (which just means hidden) energies that are present in the things found in nature. Universal or Divine energy flows through everything on our planet and when we do magick, we are harnessing the energy of certain plants, crystals, and things found in nature to help us create change. When choosing items to use in our spellwork, we take the time to learn about them. By learning the magical properties of these items, it deepens our understanding of the natural, physical world we live in. It deepens the respect we have for our planet and allows us to appreciate our role and responsibility to make it a better place.
3. It’s an energetic and creative outlet. As humans we’re natural action takers. We like to “do” and create. As much fun as sitting in meditation can be, we need to get out of our head and work with our hands. Magick gives us this opportunity through ritual and spellwork. There’s something deeply satisfying about doing magick. It’s comparable to cooking a great meal, painting, or writing. It gives our creativity a chance to flow as we write out chants, carve candles, decorate altars and play with our own energy. It releases our pent up energy and directs it into something that benefits ourselves and in turn, the world around us.
4. It’s empowering and transformative. Magick helps us shift our beliefs and perceptions about ourselves (and the Universe) so that we can truly understand how powerful we are. I’m not talking about some crazed egocentric sense of power, but rather a calm inner knowing that if we don’t like what we’re experiencing, we can change it. By doing spell work, we are actively participating in merging the physical and the spiritual world. We are fully stepping into our role as co-creators by honouring the divine and natural parts of ourselves and the Universe.
This is just (barely) scratching the surface of what magick is. I think it would take a few lifetimes to fully understand and appreciate what it really is, but that’s why they call it a magickal practice. It’s something to work at and work with regularly without being attached to the need to understand it completely. That’s the beauty of magick. Just when we think we’ve reached a new level of knowing and understanding of what magick is, another level appears taking us deeper into the mystery.
