Everything we do in life...everything we desire, create, and achieve, all starts off as a thought in our mind. These thoughts then initiate feelings inside of us, and these feelings create a vibrational frequency that attract people and situations to us. This is how our thoughts determine what we experience in life.
The best part?
We have full control over what we choose to think, and how we choose to experience life.
We’re constantly co-creating with the Universe to bring us what we want. When we feel good (happy, excited, grateful, and loving), we draw awesome things to us that match that vibration-yay!
When we feel bad (frustrated, overwhelmed, angry, and discouraged) we draw things to us that are a match to those vibrations-shitty! Basically, like attracts like.
One of the coolest things about being human is that we have the ability to picture things in our mind. The thoughts we have can be played out like little movies in our mind, and these movies help create emotions inside of us. It’s these emotions and feelings that determine what signal we’re sending out into the Universe.
Being able to visualize and see ourselves living the life we want is key to making our desires a reality.
Since our brains don’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s pretend (I use those terms loosely-everything is an illusion, but that’s a topic for another day) we have the ability to fake it ’til we make it. Or better yet, fake it ’til we become it.
Becoming more familiar and comfortable with the successful image of ourselves, allows us to fully step into being that person. Then, in the “real world” we can start taking action that’s aligned with our vision. It’s that action, combined with the vibration we send out that opens up the channel for the Universe to bring us what we want.
Ok, let’s get right into it......what is visualizing and how do you do it?
Creative visualization is simply imagining a picture in your mind. At first, it might feel like a struggle to see anything, but it’s gets easier with practice. It’s helpful to close your eyes and look up slightly (towards the middle of your forehead). Imagine a blank, grey screen (this is often referred to as your mind's eye). This is like a movie screen that you can project images on to.
Now pick an item you're familiar with, like an apple. With your eyes closed, picture the apple on your grey screen. See how red the apple is, and then look closer at its skin. Notice any colour variations like brown spots, and the texture of it. Practice seeing the apple from all angles, right down to the smallest detail.
Visualizing can take practice, but it's like working out a muscle. The more often you do it, the easier it becomes, and the stronger your visualizations will be. An easy way to practice is to take a look around the room you’re sitting in, and choose an object to focus on. Pick something simple like a lamp, or chair. Look at the object for 30 seconds, then close your eyes and imagine the object in your mind's eye (on your grey mental screen). You can do this during commercial breaks if you're watching TV to sneak some practice time easily into your day.
4 STEPS TO VISUALIZING YOUR SUCCESS!
The first step to visualizing your success is figuring out what success means to you, and what it looks like. For some, it might be speaking in front of a huge audience, travelling all over the world, or working from home and enjoying lots of time with the kids. Others might visualize themselves relaxing at a spa, writing a huge cheque out to their favourite charity, or seeing themselves signing copies of their best-selling book.
This is deeply personal, and there is no right or wrong way to do it. Some people might associate buying luxurious clothing and jewelry with success. For others, it might be staying home and being able to work in their pj’s. The main thing is to visualize something that’s going to create a strong feeling. If you’re picturing something and you feel so overcome with gratitude, and joy that you tear up-you’ve nailed it. Run with that. Create a vision that makes your heart want to burst with happiness, excitement, love and gratitude and you can’t lose.
Set aside a few minutes every day to focus on your vision. You can do this a few times throughout the day, but keep it short and sweet. I find anywhere from one to three minutes is ideal. You want enough time to clearly see yourself achieving your goal, and getting into that feeling, but you don’t want your mind to wander.
As you picture yourself being successful, notice as many details as you can. What are you wearing? What does your hair look like? Are you wearing nail polish? Jewelry? What's your posture like and how are you moving? Are there other people in your vision? If so, what are they doing? It's these details that will keep you anchored to your vision, and easily allow you to tap into the feelings you want to experience when you've reached your goal. The details will make it feel more real.
For example, one of my goals is to hit a certain level of income, and take my parents out to celebrate at my favourite fancy restaurant. In my vision I see us eating, laughing, and having an amazing time. I can clearly see us raising our glasses of wine together in a toast, and I know exactly what colour my nail polish is. As an added way to make this more real, I often have my nails done in the same colour that's in my vision.
Take inspired action. You don’t have to know all the details of what you need to do in order to be the version of you in your visualization, but you do have to do something to move closer to becoming that person. When we take physical action, it shifts the energy around us, opening up opportunities that the Universe has in store for us.
For example, let’s take someone who wants to motivate and inspire people by speaking in front of huge audiences on stage. What action could they take to get them one step closer to that vision? If they’re just starting out, maybe it’s getting clear on what their message is, and determining who needs to hear it.
Maybe they need to overcome stage fright so they join a local group like Toastmasters, or start making their own Youtube videos to practice. The point is to take regular inspired action. Yes, the Universe is working with us to bring us what we need, but we still have to show up and do our part.
Repeat steps 2 and 3. Every day. If you hold onto your vision, and take inspired action on a regular basis, you will ALWAYS be moving towards what you want to achieve, and it will become a reality if it’s aligned with your higher purpose.
Ah yes...there’s a bit of a catch. Sometimes we want things that aren’t meant for us- like winning the lottery. Sure you can picture yourself winning big, and you can take action by going out and buying a lottery ticket every day, but you might not be meant to receive a giant windfall.
Instead, focus on doing something that brings value to others, that helps people, and that makes you feel amazing because you're doing your part to make the world a better place (aawww...warm fuzzy feelings...).
Now it’s time to put things into practice and start taking that inspired action I was talking about. Reading about how to do something is totally different then actually doing it. The only way visualizing is going to help you become more successful is if you actually do it!
So right now (yeah, I’m putting my bossy pants on), schedule in a time to work these 4 steps into your day. When do you have a few minutes to yourself to focus on visualizing your future? First thing in the morning while enjoying your coffee? In the shower? Before bed? Choose a time and write it in your calendar -make a commitment to yourself.
Then schedule in the time you need to take the required action that’s going to move you closer to your goal. Focus on your vision until you become the person in that vision by taking consistent inspired action. Consistency is key.
