When you think of spoon bending, images of magicians using slight of hand techniques may come to mind. Or perhaps you've heard of Uri Geller, or watched the famous scene in the Matrix where a child states to Neo that "there is no spoon".
The bent spoon has become a symbol of psychic abilities, and charlatans trying to wow audiences with their special powers. In reality, spoon bending is a surprisingly simple technique to learn, and it's a ton of fun to boot. When I started experimenting with metal bending, it cemented everything I thought I knew about the nature of our reality and reminded me just how real my magical practice was. I had known for a long time that our thoughts mingle and dance around in the divine matrix to create the reality that we experience on a daily basis. I had witnessed the results of my focussed intentions, and my spell work for years, but there was always the tiny voice in my head that reminded me that it could all be a coincidence. Bending and twisting a piece of cutlery with barely any physical force made everything I had known intellectually very real. Bent metal can have that effect. When I practice bending it reminds me of how we are linked to the world around us, and connected to everything. Even a fork. It reminds me of how powerful our mind is, and the ability it has to work with the natural energies around us. It also gives me a bit of a release…like a psychic high.
I encourage you to give it a shot for yourself. It's empowering, super fun, and if you're crafty you can create some cool art with your results.
Alright, grab a spoon and let's get started.
Step 1: Get your mind ready
You'll want to enter a meditative state by quieting your mind and doing some deep breathing. Hold the spoon in your hands and mentally see it bending the way you want it to. Visualize a white light coming from above (from Source, the Universe…whatever you want to call the place energy comes from). See the light moving through your arms and into the spoon. I like to make sure my little brain is in a deeply relaxed state and not just the alpha state I use when doing most of my magical work. I do this by picturing myself diving into a black hole in space, or visualizing being plugged into the matrix just like they did in the movie. The second method is fun because you can picture yourself in a shiny black cat suit once your "in"- woo hoo!
Step 2: Bend baby bend
Basically there are two schools of thought on bending. One is loud, one is quiet. From what I've read, both work just fine, but I prefer the quiet method (my neighbours appreciate it I'm sure). First you need to visualize the light/energy moving through your hands into the spoon like you did in step one. Once the energy is flowing nicely and your hands feel warm and tingly, it's time to bend.
Method 1 (Loud): Yell at the spoon a few times and tell it to "BEND! BEND! BEND!"
Method 2 (Quiet): mentally ask the spoon to bend for you (see why I like the quiet method? It's much more polite.)
At this point in time you'll want to test the spoon and give it a gentle bend. If nothing happens and you feel you have to use a lot of force to bend it, you're not there yet. Keep breathing deeply and try again. You'll know when the time is right because the bending will feel effortless. It will feel like bending a cheap paperclip and you'll barely have to apply any pressure. You'll have a window of only a few seconds to bend and twist the spoon any witch way (see what i did there?) and then it will harden again.
Ta-da! That's all there is to it.
I found spoon bending to be a fun gate-way exercise that gave me the confidence to venture further down the rabbit hole and test out different mind over matter techniques. Give it a shot for yourself. Once you realize the power of mind over matter you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Just think of an upcoming challenge, or goal you're trying to reach. Are you a nervous wreck over a presentation you have to give at work? Having trouble sticking to your diet? Breathe, relax and remember that you can do it! You have the ability to bend metal with your freakin' mind!! (and a wee bit of outside force too).
