They say success lies outside your comfort zone. Kind of a catchy little phrase if you ask me, and it’s true.
While good things can happen inside that comfy zone, nothing truly amazing, transformational, or life altering will ever happen to you if you don't stretch yourself and move beyond that place. It’s impossible.
What staying inside your comfort zone WILL give you though is the feeling of contentment, ease, and peace…….but not for long. After a while those things turn into restlessness, annoyance and resentment because you KNOW it’s not where you belong.
You my magnificent co-creator, at your core, are made up of pure Source energy and that energy is ALWAYS growing and expanding. It’s natural - you can’t help it.
As part of nature, it’s what you do. EVERYTHING in nature is either growing and moving….or it’s dying. I’m guessing you’re not ready for death yet. Moving outside your comfort zone is a natural urge.
So how do you move beyond your self-imposed limitations, grow, and move outside of your comfort zone? You take a look at where you are, see where you WANT to be, and then decide to shorten that gap by taking the (sometimes scary) action.
You have to make a decision.
To grow or not to grow.
To become the person you KNOW you’re capable of becoming, or to stay stuck where you are.
It always starts with a decision.
Then the action step comes in. This is where we lose you. This is the part that SEEMS like a good idea when you’re journaling….when you’re doing your ideal day exercise and thinking about the future you want. But when it comes right down to it, THIS is where everything stops.
Because the action required to move outside your comfort zone can be scary as fuck. It’s easy to reach outside a teeny tiny bit….just a teeny bit….but then you retreat back to the safety of your “zone”.
You can tell yourself you’re “trying” or doing your best, but you’re not.
You’re just kidding yourself if you think that repeatedly doing these small things, and then retreating will ever get you where you want to go.
You need to think bigger and act boldly if you want to escape the confines of comfort.
This doesn’t mean though that it has to be some anxiety producing, nerve rattling event you force yourself to do.
Let’s say you dream about speaking on stage in front of thousands. If you’ve never even been on a stage before, speaking at a large event probably isn’t the best first step to make. Start with a small workshop or present at a local networking event. It’s ok to take smaller steps outside of your zone, as long as you don’t retreat back all the time.
The trick is, to act as if you’re already that speaker who DOES speak in front of 1000’s. When you picture yourself giving your presentation, SEE yourself in front of a huge audience. FEEL the energy from the crowd and HEAR the roaring applause they give you.
Get super comfortable with that experience in your mind. Journal and write out how amazing that experience will be (write it as if everything goes perfectly). Write your future into existence. ……I am a fucking phenomenal speaker. I love giving presentations. I always speak clearly and articulately. I have so much fun connecting with my audience…..and so on. Do some EFT tapping around the issue while you’re at it to further reduce any anxiety you have around it.
What you’re doing is preparing yourself energetically to become the person who finds those things outside your comfort zone, comfortable. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s not, so you’re programming it to believe that speaking to a massive crowd is normal.
Then (here comes the action piece) go out there and speak in front of 5 people. Or 10. If that’s too scary, talk to stuffed animals, your pets, or your friends. Just start somewhere.
Since you’ve already aligned your energy with that version of you who’s speaking in front of 1000’s and done the inner work to prepare, it won’t be as frightening. Then you just have to keep going. Keep stretching yourself and speak to a crowd of 50, 100, 500 until your physical self catches up with who you’ve expanded to be energetically.
Then it’s simply a matter of rinse and repeat for anything else you know you need to do to stay the hell outta your comfort zone. Practice living the experience in your mind. Deal with the resistance that comes up and keep going back to your ideal vision. Then it’s action time. Do what you can do to creep outside your safe place and most importantly, KEEP MOVING. KEEP GROWING. KEEP EXPANDING. And don’t look back.
