Do you ever find that you're asking the same questions to yourself, trying to find the answers within and keep coming up with nothing? Zip, zilch, nada, just the same question swirling around in your head? Sometimes we block ourselves from getting the answers we're looking for, even when we know they're inside of us. It's like we can't see the forest for the trees. If you are unable to get a clear response from your good ol' inner self, give automatic writing a try. I used to be turned off of the idea of contacting higher spirits to guide me. I had images of being possessed by demons and all sorts of spiritual ickiness, but then I realized that I was just getting in touch with my higher self. No need to conjure up spirits, simply ask your higher self to guide you. Nothing creepy about that. In our culture we're taught that the answers are always "out there". They come from our parents, teachers, religious leaders, and Oprah. By using automatic writing as a tool, you kind of trick yourself into thinking you're asking someone else for answers…..pssst….your higher self is still you. You have all the answers inside of you. You need to connect to the divine that's residing inside of your pretty little self to access them. It's just easier for your mind to seek out answers from other sources, so let's humour our brain and pretend we're looking elsewhere for the info.
How to do it:
1. Get into a light meditative state. Do some deep breathing and count yourself down into Alpha, or use whatever method you like to quiet your mind.
2. Get a specific question in mind.
Ex. How do I stop procrastinating and get on track with my business?
Why do I keep sabotaging my health by binging on junk food at night?
How do I attract the best romantic relationship?
Why does my cat attack my feet at 3am?
3. Grab a piece of paper and write at the top something like "I ask that only the spirit of my highest good speak through me". (This just covers your ass in case you've got any evil spirits lurking around that want to stir up shit in your life by giving you phoney answers). Then write your question out below on the same paper. You can use a special journal for your automatic writing, or a binder separated into categories. I like the binder method because I can refer back to questions I've asked and they're all organized by category (health, business, magical stuff, relationships, etc).
4.Start writing. It doesn't matter what comes out, just keep the pen moving. Even if all you're writing is "this is stupid, I'm not getting any answers, but I'll just keep writing because that's what it says to do in step 4". Once your pen gets moving, your mind will settle down and the answer will come to you. You may notice your penmanship getting messier, and the speed of your writing getting faster. I often have to rewrite my answer while it's still fresh in my mind so I can read it afterwards.
5. When you feel satisfied, stop writing, read it, mull it over and rewrite it if you think you'll have trouble reading it later. I like to put it away, come back to it later in the day, and look at it with fresh eyes.
I've been amazed at the answers I've received using this technique. I read over things that have come out and it doesn't even sound like me ,so I know it's coming from a higher source. Often the answers are given along with other bits of information that have been buried in my psyche for years-neat stuff. If you find yourself struggling with the same questions, give automatic writing a shot. Our higher self is always there with the answers, we just have to shut off our chatty monkey-mind off and get out of the way.
