I think God/Goddess/Source/etc is always trying to communicate with us, but often the voice gets drowned out with our mindless thoughts of worry, negative self-talk, and when we consciously zone out by watching t.v. or surfing the net. It's said that Spirit speaks to us quietly…in a whisper, and that's why it's so hard for us to hear it's voice.
Sometimes however, it can give us a gentle smack upside the head when we need it most. This happened to me over the weekend. My Saturdays are usually spent running errands, doing laundry, and cleaning the house. My to-do list is relatively small compared to what most people cram into their day off, yet I still find myself feeling frantic trying to get things done so I can relax and enjoy my time off. I end up feeling bitchy, rushed, and on edge….so very far from what I want to be experiencing. If I'm hanging out with friends I'm watching the clock and thinking of all the other things I could/should be getting accomplished. The whole "enjoy the moment, live in the present" thing goes right out the window, and peace gets replaced with anxiety. This past Saturday was no different and just as I was spinning around, cleaning my kitchen I found the card that's pictured above on top of my fridge. It says:
"YOU ARE HERE"
Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.
Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out.
Dear one, I am here for you.
I found this card months ago tucked into a library book. I'm not sure what book it was, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't even one about meditation. What's really interesting about this, is that the words "Dear one, I am here for you" came through to me during an automatic writing session I had done about a week or two before finding the card inside the book. When I was doing the automatic writing I was feeling really disconnected, and when those words came through it hit me like a ton of bricks. I even cried a little. When I found the card last weekend, I was instantly pulled back to the memory of getting that message and feeling totally connected once again. I love it when stuff like this happens! Sometimes the Universe just knows when you need to hear things, and what you need to hear. I've been actively seeking out signs like this, and it's amazing where and how you can find them. They can be messages of hope when you're having a super shitty day, reassurance that you're making wise choices, or encouraging signs that the Universe has your back and you're taken care of.
How do you seek these signs out? Simply pay attention to the little things. It can be lyrics to certain songs that stand out. An example that always comes up for me is Pink's Blow Me (One Last Kiss). It's the first line "White knuckles and sweaty palms from hanging on too tight" that's my recurring message. It has nothing to do with ending a bad relationship for me. It's about my need to be in control, and push and plough through things instead of going with the flow. When I hear those words it makes me laugh, relax, and just let go (for a moment at least :). I also get a cute catchy song stuck in my head, which is an added bonus. Another example is random signs you see when you're out walking around. A few years ago I was in a bit of funk and took a stroll through my neighbourhood. Stuck to a hydro pole, I saw a sticker that read "I love all of you". I teared up (in public….embarrassing…) and instantly felt a flood of love from Source that nearly knocked the crap out of me. It was an overwhelming, beautiful and comforting feeling.
Once you get into the habit of keeping an eye and ear out for signs, you'll begin to find them more and more often. You'll see messages hidden in everyday places, in conversations, and in the most unlikely places. Don't try too hard to find them (back to the white knuckles thing), just set an intention in the morning to be open to receiving divine messages and see what you discover throughout your day. I think the Divine wants us to know that we are ALWAYS loved, and supported. It's always there for us, guiding us….we just have to watch, listen and learn to recognize the signs.
